"It is a vast, rambling and sometimes amazing treasure house of the literate mind at its feistiest and most independent" --
The Buffalo News

Bellow and Botsford "should be saluted" --
The TLS (London)

About the Author

Saul Bellow and Keith Botsford have been friends since the early 1950s. Frustrated by the want of first-rate literary magazines that were neither chic nor academic, they have published three journals together, THE NOBLE SAVAGE in the 1960s, ANON in the decade that followed, and currently THE REPUBLIC OF LETTERS. All of them have been models of discernment and discovery, free of partisanship or theory, all of them have since become valued collectibles. This anthology creates a mosaic of literature over the past fifty years with outstanding stories, poems, articles, essays and commentary chosen by a pair of altruists who are themselves writers of no small distinction.
